Preparation of South Asian Wushu Championship
reach final stage

LALITPUR, July 28 - Preparations for the first South Asian Wushu
Championship, taking place in Kathmandu from September 5-7 are in final stage, the Nepal
Wushu Association (NWA) announced here Friday.
The two-day event is reported to draw some 100 players from five South Asian
countries, apart from Bhutan and Maldives in ten events under different weight categories.
There will be 92 medals, including 28 each of gold and silver and 36 bronze, at stake.
The South Asian Wushu Federation, which was formed earlier this year, with
the objective to develop the game of wushu in the region, had decided to hold a regional
tournament every two years. And Nepal was entrusted to stage the inaugural edition.
Seven different committees have been formed under the coordination of
NWA's officials for the successful hosting of the competition, the organisers stated at a
press meet held at Birendra International Sports Complex. According to NWA, the committees
thus formed were tournament committee, national team preparation, management, ceremony,
media, finance and transportation.
The organising cost of the tournament has estimated at Rs 1.87 million, which
NWA is expected meet through the help from various sources, including National Sports
Council (NSC), Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC), Asian Wushu Federation and NWA would bear
any deficient, according to the NWA press release.
On the occasion, the member-secretary of the NSC, Binod Shankar Palikhe,
urged NWA for the effective hosting of the competition while assuring every possible
support from NSC.
The president of NOC, Rukma Shamsher Rana, expressing the necessity to make
the game of wushu more popular in the region, stressed for the unity of martial art in the
country.
Giving more information about the tournament, the NWA secretary-general
Pranil Dhoj Karki said that the tournament was being organised following the decision made
by the Asian Wushu Federation meeting held in Hong Kong to promote the game in South Asian
region.
He also explained about the selection of the Nepalese team for the
tournament. Nepalese team, which has been under close camp training under supervision of
four instructors will be fielding 12 players (six men and six women) in thailu event while
other eight (all men) will fight for top honours in sansau event.
The president of NWU, Prasiddha Pande and vice-president Gyanendra Ratna
Tuladhar were other speakers on the occasion. |
