Off The Beat

Good reason

Why is Home Minister Govinda Raj Joshi suddenly playing hawk with Maoists when they are willing, the prime minister is willing, and Sher-e-Deuba is more than willing to seek a political solution?

It may not be difficult to answer this one if you consider the increasing budgetary allocations to fight Maoists and the secret funds that need not be disclosed that could be at stake.

So, that’s a good reason for wanting war. (JBR)

Another reason

Another reason why the Home Minister is so much in the fighting mood is that he does not want Sher Bahadur Deuba to pull it off, because if he does, the minister may as well kiss his prime ministerial aspirations good bye for a long time to come. So, when minister Joshi rants about the Maoists, he has good reasons to do so. (SR)

Quirky souls

Wonders indeed abound in the characters of man. Pining for what’s not within one’s reach, imagining what’s practically unimaginable or relishing what’s obviously contradictory to one’s own nature are typical of man’s hidden urge, especially among those with quirky sense of judgement. Talk about the concern for transparency in administration, for instance. Obviously, those least bothering about it in their own affairs demand it the most from others. Funny, isn’t it? (CK)

Making bucks

Wanna make instant bucks? The latest job option is either a municipality guard or traffic cop in the valley. With the two playing hide and seek with roadside vendors--sometimes allowing and sometimes raiding casual stalls of goods--money seems to enter their pocket without any major effort. A guard who seized a dozen wrist watches from un unsuspecting girl vendor at Ratnapark the other day gave me the same impression as this traffic cop on a horse who deliberately manhandled a mango wallah with a petty motive. Aren’t these two jobs really alluring?  (KC)

Dada’s strength

The Patna born dada after gaining some strength blasted the handpicked master without justifying his stand. Guess, why he did this at a time when Maoists are wracking the NC cradle? Clue, this has come after the hindi dada asked his gurus to release a string of names. Anyway some bootlickers are rallying around the dada’s neck before he exits for life. (PB)

Fly by night

The much touted hotel enterprise Taragaon Regency called its first public and third formal AGM at the Int’l Convention Hall this week. But the proceedings were abruptly disturbed in the middle of the day, thanks to sudden bedlam that ensued due to management’s failure to handle the crowd of shareholders. Hours after shareholders were asked to go home by police, one hears the management later declared the AGM done! Guess what will be the eventual turnout of the touted project in Bouddha. (SW)

Nov accord

Indo-centric NSP’s decision to dissociate itself from all party chaiyapani is not a new thing. When it comes to November agreement, NSP is away counting the increasing number of bhikharis. NSP aims to convert more Indians into Nepalese. This is good, it claims, which will boost the image of bhikharis. So don’t be surprised if more exotic souls come stretching their hands before you everyday. (RB)

Domestic drama

You might be shocked, a drama is being performed by victims of Maoist-stricken areas. When a cold war is screening both Koirala and Deuba from the hot summer waves, the refugess are cooking someting wonderful in the camp in front of the Prime Minister’s office. All have their duties, and yours? Just watch what these pitiable refugees will do next.  (RM)

Coup plot ?

Popular - but former - state minister for population and environment BB Blayar regularly steals public discussions on the capital’s pollution problems these days. This despite the presence of incumbent MOPE state minister (SR Joshi) -- who often stays cool and silent. Meanwhile, grapevine has it that Joshi is hellbent on doing politics and not on improving the foul environment. Less concern on environment? If such remains the case, then why not plot a(nother) coup attempt to reinstate Balayar? Honourable leaders in the Bhattarai coterie, are you listening?   (LYNX)
