Fire guts property worth over 5 m

BIRATNAGAR, March 21 - Fire gutted 23 wooden houses in Pathari VDC ward NO 1 of Morang district on Saturday, Sub-Inspector Basudev Bhatta of Pathari Police Post told The Kathmandu Post on Tuesday.

Nineteen houses were reduced to ashes while four houses were partially damaged. The damage is estimated at about 2.8 million rupees. A total of 151 people belonging to 23 families were affected by fire, Bhattarai informed.

Fire-brigades from Biratnagar, Itahari and Dharan took three hours to control the blaze. The fire had destroyed foodgrains, clothes, utensils, cash and gold including some domestic animals, police informed. The fire had escaped from the stack of hay.

The Natural Calamity Relief Committee has provided 7 kilograms of rice per person and 6 kilograms of flattened rice and 600 rupees per family as immediate relief, according to Chief District Officer Tulsi Prasad Bhattarai.

Similarly, various other items such as tents, clothes and utensils were provided by Pathari-based Teachers’ Unity Forum, Trade Management Committee, Sunakhari Service Committee, Koshi Bus Entrepreneurs’ Committee, Agriculture Labour Organisation and Nepal Red Cross Society.

Similarly, in Dharampani VDC ward No 8, located at the southern belt of Tanahun district, fire gutted 13 houses and 12 cowsheds on Monday.

According to a report sent by our Damauli-based reporter quoting Deputy Superintendent of Police Keshab Raj Adhikari of Tanahun district Police Office, the fire was caused by a five-year-old boy.

The fire destroyed property worth three million rupees and killed 12 animals.
