Trichandra lift inaugural VC Cricket Running Shield

By a Post Reporter

KATHMANDU, March 26 - Trichandra Multiple Campus became the first champions of the Vice-Chancellor Running Shield cricket tournament Sunday as they defeated the Tribhuvan University by five wickets.

The final played at University ground saw Tribhuvan University in trouble tackling the tight bowling, coupled with some outstanding fielding from TC after the skipper, Lok Raj Bhatta won the toss and elected to bat first. And they could only muster 122 runs in 40 overs.

University batsmen’s poor running between the wickets in the match did not help their cause either. But it was also because of some brilliant fielding by TC’s Bimal Bhattarai, who effected three direct hits at the stumps.

They suffer double blow with just five runs on board. The first wicket fell in the form of Naresh Nepal when he failed to make into his grounds. Apurva Thapa, who joined Durga Subedi soon followed without scoring when he tried to play across the line in Ritesh Baral’s straight delivery only to find his off-stump knocked back.

The TC misery did not end there as they were soon found reeling at 18-5. Subedi was run out after making five while Navin Rawal (0) became Baral’s another prey and Shashi Bhusan Pradhan was next to go, out bowled by Gaurav Pokharel at four.

Only two partnerships, first between Shanta Shah and Roshan Gosain for the sixth wicket and Kanchan Pant and Shil Niddhi Chaudhary helped them reach the respectable total. Pant topscored with 36 before being run out while Shah and Gosain made 12 and Chaudhary contributed 12.

TC bowlers, after being erratic initially giving away 29 extras raised their performance with much needed support from the fielders. Ritel Baral and Bhawesh Shah picked two wickets, but it was Baral who was most economical, conceding just 12 runs off his 8 overs. Gaurav Pokharel and Rajiv Pant were the other wicket takers.

TC did not fare any better than their counterparts when they started to chase the total of 125.

The reshuffling of regular line failed bring good result and they lost their first wicket at the same total (5) as that of Tribhuvan University when Sandeep Shah was clean bowled by Kanchan for one.

However, runs kept flowing for TC with Ashok Adhikari occupying the crease. He added 30 runs with Rajesh Chaudhary for the second wicket before Chaudhary was run out for six.

Skipper Bhatta revived Tribhuvan University’s hopes when he bowled Raj Kamal Basnet for nought that left TC at 38-3.

But the important 32-run fourth wicket partnership between Adhikari (31) and Bimal Bhattarai (21) and unending 46-run for the sixth wicket between Amit DC (14) and Ritesh Baral (22) sealed the match in TC’s favour in 35.1 overs with five wickets to spare. Unsurprisingly, Baral was named man of the match for his good all-round performance.

Navin Rawal was the most successful University bowler with two wickets.

Chandra Murthi of Saraswoti Campus was declared the man of the tournament while the distinction of best batsmen and bowler went to Nepal Commerce Campus’s Monish Shrestha and Gaurav Pokharel of TC respectively.

The University Vice-Chancellor, Nabin Prakash Jung Shah gave away shields, trophies and other prizes to the players amid a prize distribution function held after the match.
