Workshop on children ends

KATHMANDU, May 12 - The four-day Regional workshop on ‘Child-Centred Policies and Programmes on Working Children’ in South and Central Asia concluded here today.

The workshop which was a part of the series of regional workshops deliberated on general overview of the debate on children and work, situation analysis on the same, approaches to child development and concepts of children and childhood, the place of work and education in the lives of children, among others.

The discussions were held in the backdrop of ILO Convention and Recommendations on the worst forms of child labour.

Four Case Studies - Domestic Child Workers, Trafficking, Child Sex Workers, and Bonded Child Labour - from the region were examined by the activists in four different groups during the workshop.

A representative from the International Labour Organization(ILO) said the organization was in favour of countrywise implementation of the ILO convention. "Worst forms of child labour has to be considered in a country’s local and cultural context," he said.

The workshop was conducted by Save the Children Alliance, South and Central Asia and was participated by representatives from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Kyrgistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
