FM hints at raising civil servants’ pay

BIRATNAGAR, May 13 - Finance Minister Mahesh Acharya has assured that the forthcoming budget will make the salary of the civil servants more attractive. The budget will make the employees result- and service-oriented.

The Finance Minister said that the budget will accord top priority to raising economic growth rate, reform in macro-economy to accelerate the pace of development, alleviate poverty and maintain law and order.

FM Acharya made this remark while inaugurating a pre-budget discussion programme organized by Morang Traders’ Association here today.

"The coming budget will focus on making the people feel secure, rendering the role of poverty alleviation effective, finding out the main challenges of development and setting strategies accordingly," said Acharya.

The Finance Minister also said the budget will be revenue- and result-oriented and it will strengthen the sources of revenue mobilization and make the strategies of privatization broader and efficacious.

Value Added Tax (VAT) will be taken as the main source of revenue collection and if the retailers also cooperate the government with VAT, the government will also fulfil hundreds of their demands, said Minister Acharya.

The budget will make efforts to attract direct foreign investment (FDI) and to make the private sector and economic liberalization more effective. It will also focus on managing expenses, revenue mobilization, socio-economic development, consolidation of financial structure and financial management, said Finance Minister Acharya.

He said the coming budget will encompass even the oppositions’ suggestions which will boost agriculture products, give priority to social sector investment, promote overall investment and accord top preference to the community suffering from the imbalanced development.

The budget will also introduce strategies to privatize state-owned banks as they are making loss and their delivery is far below satisfactory level, said the finance minister.

He said the budget will consolidate the foundation of revenue collection and mobilization and make the fruits of economic development accessible to the common people.

16 representatives from all the district chambers of the eastern region also participated in the discussion programme chaired by Udaya Prasad Ojha, President of Morang Traders’ Association.
