Dolakha backlog cases reduced

Post Report

DOLAKHA, Nov 2 - The backlog of legal cases in the district court has been greatly reduced this year as a result of a decline in registration of new cases and an increased ratio of settling the cases by the court.

Nowadays, fewer cases are being registered with the court after the Maoist insurgents settled many cases in different villages a few months ago. They resolved many cases by bringing together both parties for arbitration in different villages including Suri, Shailungeswor, Japhe, Khare and Sunkhani. This has fueled to the fewer number of cases coming to the court.

Besides, the court has also, with the addition of new judges, speeded up the process of resolving the cases filed with the court.

Acording to the court, there was a backlog of 1,081 cases in the fiscal year 1998-99 of which 363 cases were settled during the year. However, 701 cases were settled during the fiscal year 1999-2000 out of a total 1,026 cases to be decided by the court.

According to a court record-keeper, 42 cases were settled last year by the end of the month of Asoj ( September-October), but 93 cases were settled in the same period of this year. Similarly, 70 cases were registered last year by the end of the month of Asoj (September-October), but only 43 cases were filed in the same period this year.

Court employees said this is the first time in many years that the backlog of cases has been so few (slightly more than 300 for the fiscal year 2000-2001).

Two cases related to Maoist workers filed against Hem Bahadur Shrestha and Purna Bahadur Khadka were settled 7 months ago. Both of them received a 10 year prison sentence.
