Surya Tobacco, Khetan Group in semis

Post Report

KATHMANDU, Nov 3 - Surya Tobacco and Khetan Group today moved into semi-finals of the Second Super Sixes cricket tournament organized by Soaltee Crowne Plaza which got underway today at the Tribhuvan University Ground, Kirtipur.

In the first match played today, Surya Tobacco defeated the much fancied Pakistan Embassy team by six wickets. Pakistanis scored 63 runs losing one wicket after winning the toss with Jishan Arshad scoring 26 runs. In reply Surya Tobacco's Srikanth Dhungana steered his team to victory with his 30 not out in 4.3 overs.

The match between Khetan Group and British Gorkhas proved to be a one sided affair as the Gorkhas couldn't stand against the disciplined attack of the Khetan Group and scored 30 runs at the expense of three wickets. Monir Shrestha was the pick of the bowlers taking two wickets in the single over he bowled without giving away any single run. This so far is the only maiden over of the tourney. In reply, Khetan Group won the match losing only one wicket.

In the third match of the day, Surya Tobacco continued their good form with another win over Radisson Hotel. Radisson batted first scoring 59 for five but were proved to be the second best as Surya Tobacco's Srikanth led his team to victory in just 4.2 overs scoring 21 runs with his bat. Radisson's 26 extras while they were bowling didn't help their cause.

For the second consecutive match British Gorkhas proved short of match practice. Batting first they scored 36 runs in five overs and couldn't bowl well enough to keep the opponent Nepal Bangladesh Bank below target. NB Bank reached the target in 2.3 overs without any loss of wicket.

In the closely fought match of pool 'B' Surya Tobacco sustained their winning streak over NATA, also a strong side. Surya Tobacco scored 59 runs in the allotted overs with the help of Srikanth Dhungana's not out 30 runs. NATA, the only side in the tourney with father and son in the squad fell two runs short and lost the match.

Nepal Arab Bank's match with the British Gorkhas proved to be a cakewalk for the former as they won by six wickets. The Gorkhas seemed to fight a losing battle as win also would not have seen them to the next round. They made a paltry 31 runs which the NABIL batsmen crossed with captain Laxman Joshi showing the way scoring 14 not out.

The last league match for the Khetan team brought them another win. This time over Nepal Bangladesh Bank. Khetan team scored 60 runs after losing the toss with Monir Shrestha again shining for his team scoring 31 runs after which he had to retire according to Super Sixes rules. Sandeep Shrestha who came to open the innings with Monir struck a four hitting the advertising board of Kantipur Publications which earned him a cash prize of Rs 200 from the advertiser. In reply NB Bank could only score 44 runs in five overs.

In the eighth match of the day, NATA defeated Radisson by two runs. NATA batting first scored 56 runs. The father son pair of Kiran and Kapil Aryal opened the batting for NATA. In reply Radisson could just manage 54 runs losing three wickets. NATA received 24 runs as extras.

The last match of the day proved to be the most exciting match so far in which Khetan Group just managed to beat Nepal Arab Bank by six wickets. Nepal Arab Bank scored 52 runs losing five wickets. The highlight of the match was Laxman Joshi's innings of 27 runs which consisted of shots all round the wicket. In the end loss of too many wickets proved costly for the Bank. Khetan Group reached the target without losing any wicket with the contribution of Monir (27 not out) and Sandeep (23 not out).
