Post Report

DUANI, Dolpa, Nov 7 - The entire financial transactions and development works of this remote mountainous district have come to a complete standstill since Maoist rebels raided the district headquarters, including the only branch office of Nepal Bank Limited, on September 25.

The Maoist rebels looted more than Rs 50 million from the bank, killed 14 police personnel, injured 40 and abducted 12 jail guards during the daring raid.

As a result of the raid on the bank, registration fees of 151 high school students  sitting for the coming SLC examinations from this district had to be deposited in the national coffer in Kathmandu, Acting District Education Officer in Dolpa, Motilal Mahatara said.

Mahatara said  teachers of a dozen primary schools in the district were deprived of their monthly salaries following the looting of the bank by the rebels. Bank authorities are still not prepared to re-open the bank, which was completely emptied during the raid.

The amounts to be deposited for the ration contract of the Royal Nepal Army and security personnel of Dolpa National Park have been kept at the army barracks because of the unavailability of a bank in the district, Chief District Officer Bal Krishna Panthi told The Kathmandu Post.

District Development Committee Chairman Shiva Nanda Budha said several district-level and national-level development works have been affected due to the Maoist raid at the bank, where the development fund was deposited. "We are having a hard time even carrying out our daily administrative jobs," said Chairman Budha.

Budha said locals, including government employees, had requested the government and the bank authorities to re-open the bank as soon as possible. "If the bank is not re-opened soon, the government's entire policy and programme will face severe set backs in the district," Chairman Budha said.
