Clarke, Alexander steal HMB show

KATHMANDU, Nov 11 - World cupper Barry Clarke and Sydney
Olympic rider Caroline Alexander of United Kingdom stole the show in the last leg of the
three-race series of Himalayan Mountain Bike (HMB) Championship 2000 organized here today.
Barry won the race in the open category while Caroline
stood second. Caroline, at a point in the race was leading when Barry was down with a flat
tyre but soon he overtook her finishing first. However, the overall winner in the category
according to points after three races was Ramesh Tamang, a Nepali who finished 6th in
todays race scoring a total of 210 points. Points are given to every participant
according to his standings in the race with the winner getting 120 points, runner-up 110
and so on.
In the seniors category Nico Vreeken of Holland won
today and also led the points tally to become the series winner. Sonam Gurung of Nepal was
second in todays race and overall third.
In the womens category, Sarasoti Bhujel who had been
leading the points tally so far had an accident and could not finish the race and was
reduced to an overall second. The overall winner in this category was Kate Thompson who
earlier was trailing behind Bhujel.
Rajendra Khadka led the points table in the juniors
category winning last two of the three races scoring 350 points. He was followed by
Sanjeev Thapa with 340 points and Manoj Shrestha with 300 points.
In the inter-school category, Little Angels School defeated
British School to take the title. Little Angels showed a fine consistency winning all the
races while the Brits were runners-up in all three.
Speaking after the race, Barry Clarke said that he enjoyed
the race and in future he would like to see more Nepalis in the race.
Caroline Alexander said that she felt more at home than in
a competition. She also added that the race was not that difficult. Both of the Britons
felt that Nepal has right terrain for sports like these. |
