Responsible diplomats please

The government’s decision to appoint Mr Achyut Krishna Kharel as the Nepalese ambassador to Myanmar was a very poor move. How could the government appoint somebody who was dismissed for his incompetence from the post of Nepal Police IGP. His appointment would have seriously tarnished the image of our country.

Mr Kharel in his tenure as IGP was responsible for failure to curb the Maoist problem. He was responsible for the deaths of many police officers. He left those police personnel to die as he failed to reinforce them. Besides, the police force under his tenure has been involved in a one sided deal with Indian Oil Corporation, which has further tarnished the image of the police. It is very important that the government avoid following the old tradition of awarding the post of ambassadors to ex-Police and Army chiefs. What we need is experienced and seasoned diplomats capable for serving the purpose of attracting foreign investment and representing Nepal better.

Another example of irresponsible diplomacy is the case of Mr. Malla, the ambassador to Germany. He did not even bother to send invitation for the Dasain get together. It is the tradition of Nepalese embassies to organize such a gathering for Nepalese citizens living abroad everywhere.

It is therefore necessary for the government to appoint only responsible and capable people in the respected and important post of ambassadors. The current ambassadors also need to be responsible in conducting their day to day activities.
