Save Rani Pokhari

Now that notice has been issued to stop the construction of a shopping small on the northern edge of Rani Pokhari, action must be taken to demolish whatever has been constructed. Action must be taken against the person who issued the land owner certificate and against the concerned persons at KMC who gave the authority to go ahead with the construction. If this is accomplished, this will be an example.

Various construction work such as petrol pump, restaurant, police station and court must be demolished. It should be done at any cost, and let that be an eye-opener and an example to people who are all set to twist the arm of the law. Agreed that some kind of fund has to be generated for the upkeep of the historic Rani Pokhari, but surely there must be another solution, which couldn’t be worse than the one we have now.

I always thought that such a lax attitude of doing things the easy and cheap way existed only in our southern neighbour. But it has also seeped into our system like an epidemic. But at the end of the day, nobody would probably give a thought to this, because we have our priorities to fight against petrol-kerosene hike. But should this decision to halt the construction be tampered with, the power to change this will inevitably fall on the people of Kathmandu.
