Indian vehicles used in border crimes
Post Report
BIRGUNJ, Nov 16 - Santosh Kumar alias Tuntun Singh was shot
dead on last Saturday in broad daylight here in the busy market of Ranighat. The killers
escaped on their Indian motorcycle.
The following day, criminals who looted Rs 464 thousand on
the main road by shooting at two people who were carrying the money also had an Indian
motorcycle.
Police have so far been unable to trace the criminals. Police
said that the main reason for this is the fact that they had escaped on Indian
motorcycles. If they had driven Nepali motorcycles, the criminals would have been nabbed
by now, DSP Prem Bahadur Chand told The Kathmandu Post.
"Indian vehicles are used to a great extent in the
increasing incidents of crime taking place in Birgunj. If we could control these vehicles,
the crime rates should fall," he added.
Indian vehicles are used in 50 percent of criminal cases
taking place here. In most cases, the number plates are false and the owner of the vehicle
cannot be traced and arrested, DSP Chand said.
Indian vehicles including motorcycles can move freely in
border towns. There is a charge of Rs 400 per day for cars and jeeps, and a charge of Rs
50 for motorcycles but only if they have to travel deep into the country.
Chairman of Birgunj Town Development Committee Shyam Pokhrel
and Deputy Mayor of Birgunj Krishna Murari Rauniyar, are of the opinion that the Indian
vehicles should not be allowed to run in Birgunj in a bid to ensure peoples safety.
DSP Chand also says the time has come to ban Indian vehicles
from running in Birgunj because of the fact that they are being used in criminal
activities.
