FNJ president flays Govt
Post Report
KATHMANDU, Nov 18 - President of the
Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) Suresh Acharya today criticized the government
for blaming major newspapers of voicing out pro-Maoist news and not fulfilling even the
basic needs of the press.
"Name the paper and on which volume
terrorism has been voiced...the government should even initiate legal action then,"
said Acharya at an interaction programme held in the capital on Saturday to mark the 10th
Anniversary of Janadesh, a vernalar weekly that is said to be close to the CPN-Maoist.
The government has been repeatedly blaming
the countrys press of being "mouth-piece" of the Maoists who, for the past
four and a half years, have been waging a guerrilla war demanding a republic state that
has claimed nearly 1,500 lives.
"It is very unfair to accuse the entire
press for such acts...And even when it comes to fulfilling basic responsibilities towards
the press, the government is looking for legal binding," Acharya added.
Speaking at the programme, Acharya also stressed
on the inaction of the proposed Right to Information Bill and to promptly implement the
decision to provide public welfare advertisements in lieu of concessional rate newsprint
supply.
