Shukla topples Shreeram

KATHMANDU, Nov 24 - Third seed Shreeram Magar was ousted from men’s singles category by Kamlesh Shukla of India in the Third Carlsberg Open Tennis Tournament jointly organized by Gorkha Brewery and All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association.

Kamlesh defeated Shreeram 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 though latter played some excellent serve and volley to win the first set. Magar, though leading the second set 4-1 and in a position to dominate the proceedings at 40-0 in the sixth game lost the serve and eventually the set to the Indian. Shukla showing his skills with ground strokes,also showed his prowess with fine backhand and forehand display to take the match away from the third seed.

Shukla is set to play Kaptan Karsoliya in the semis. Karsoliya defeated top seed Krishna Ghale in his previous outing in the men’s singles.

In a match of the same category played today, Raju Chhetri defeated Rameshwor Thapa 6-1, 6-2 while second seed Sanu Gurung defeated Pramod Dayanand 6-3, 6-0.

Women’s singles category of the tournament saw the sub-junior girls’ dominance in the field. Vindiya Dayanand advanced to the semi-final defeating Inderjit Kaur 6-1, 6-0 while Malika Rana, runner-up in the sub-junior category, defeated I Murakami 6-1, 6-2 to enter into the group of four.

The pair of Manoj Rana and Kamal Thapa today defeated C Dhondup and Krishna Gurung 6-2, 7-5 (8-6) in an exciting match to secure a berth in the final of Veteran’s doubles. In the same event G Tamrakar and D Shrestha lost their race to the final to the pair of Subarna Dhakhwa and Abdul Rehman 2-6, 0-6.

In the mixed doubles category, air of Pramod and Vindiya Dayanand advanced to the final defeating Krishna Ghale and Cathy in a gruelling three setter 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Dayanand also won his match in the junior singles category beating M McDougal 6-2, 6-4 advancing to the semis. In another match of the same event Krishna Karsoliya, winner of sub-junior title, lost to Dawa Sonam 5-7, 6-2, 3-6.
