12 hurt in road mishap

KATHMANDU, Nov 27 - Twelve people who were injured in a bus collision in Khairenitar, Tribhuvan Highway have been brought to the capital’s Bir hospital for treatment.

Krishna Dahal, Krishna Basnet, Subas Basnet, Ramesh Thapa, Arjun Buddathoki, Bikram Rai, Mast Kumari Rai, Kiran Gurung, Laxman Thapa, Bindu Bohara, Ramesh Dahal, Shankar Thapa were among the injured brought to Bir Hospital.

According to the hospital authorities, a Sajha bus bearing registration number Na 2 Kha 1400 plying from Katari, Udaypur to Kathmandu collided with another bus heading for Pokhara on the highway near Khairenitar at 2:30 p.m. today.


‘Britain in Nepal’ week in capital on

KATHMANDU, Nov 27- " Britain in Nepal" week is currently being celebrated in Kathmandu. The event kicked-off with Princess Anne inaugurating the British Council’s new building at Lainchaur adjoining the British Embassy on November 24.

The week-long programme includes three events: a music concert, a Best of British Film Week and a Human Rights Films and Cartoon Festival. The two-day music concert featuring Network of Sparks, a British musical group and Sur Sudha, a Nepali percussion group, concluded on November 25. Screenings of chartbusters British films like Chicken Run and Sense and Sensibility, the main attraction of the event, is on at the Russian Cultural Centre. The Human Rights Film and Cartoon Festival, which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday is to screen Nepali documentaries like Chameli and Ujeli. An official at the Council informed, a panel discussion with viewers and human rights activists would be held after each screening.

"The events is organised to celebrate the 40 years of service of the British Council in Nepal", said Kiran Bhattarai, the Human Rights Film and Cartoon Festival co-ordinator.The British Council has been working in Nepal since 1959.

The Britain in Nepal Week is to conclude on November 30th.


Road opens for light vehicles

DADELDHURA (Amargadhi), Nov 27 - Light vehicles started plying along the 10-km long Bag Bazaar-Bagarkot road for the first time on Sunday. The road was constructed jointly by Dadeldhura District Development Committee and GTZ, the German development cooperation agency, under the World Food Programme.

Overseer Mohan Bhatta said the road was currently suitable only for light vehicles.

More than 25,000 people from four VDCs residing west of here will benefit from the road. Representatives from the DDC and GTZ made an on-site inspection of the road travelling in light vehicles yesterday.

The Vice-President of Bagarkot VDC, Hemraj Chataut said the road - even if only for light vehicles, would be a great relief to the locals. He said the locals would no longer have to depend on mule-train or man’s physical strength to transport goods once the construction of the rural road was complete.


Environmental mapping to help Dharan’s development

DHARAN, Nov 27 - An environmental mapping project kicked off here on Monday with the technical assistance of Bhukamp Prabidhi Rastriya Samaj Nepal and financial assistance of RUDO South Asia.

The project is scheduled to continue for one year.

The mapping project began after necessary data relating to the existing environmental, geological and geographical situation of Dharan municipality area were collected. Under the project, the environmental map will be drawn on the basis of these facts.

The first workshop seminar organised to mark the beginning of the project was inaugurated here by MP Kunta Sharma on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, she expressed confidence that the environmental mapping will contribute to the sustainable development of Dharan.

Geologist Shiva Bahadur Pradhananga, president of the Samaj said the environmental mapping project will help increase public awareness on the risks which would have to be faced in case of earthquakes and will instruct in ways of protecting people from the dangers associated with such risks.

Dixit, informed the participants that the environmental mapping project, to be implemented in Dharan, is the third of its kind since the project was launched in Madhyapur Thimi and Kirtipur municipalities.

Mayor of Dharan municipality Manoj Kumar Meyangbo said the sustainable development programme of Dharan will begin scientifically when the environmental mapping project is complete.

Forty participants from the technical committee and the advisory committee of the project participated in the workshop.
