AIDS awareness workshop held

Post Report

KATHMANDU, Nov 28 - In an effort to create an environment for collaboration between the non-government organisations working in the sector of HIV/AIDS and Micro Finance Institutes (MFIs) without losing their separate focus and specialisation, a one-day workshop was organised here today. The non-government sector and micro-finance sector are planning to integrate education on HIV/AIDS in the social mobilisation activity by various ways. The idea borrowed from the experience and success of MFIs integrating their work with awareness raising in Africa, will be tried out here in Nepal too, according to Centre for Micro Finance (CMF). According to CMF, the MFIs can integrate their programmes with awareness raising by educating the staff on HIV/AIDS and providing educational materials and making the clients aware of the disease during the group discussions. It also plans to assist NGOs working on HIV/AIDS in providing financial services to their beneficiaries. Speaking at the inaugural session today, Bharati Silwal Giri , assistant representative of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said the micro finance sector must go beyond credits and savings and work towards saving lives as well. She blamed the policy to control population stating that it ran contradictory to the policies adopted to cope with HIV/AIDS.
