Ex-Kamaiya hopeful about future

DHANGADHI, Sept 30 - Erstwhile-Kamaiya Ramlal who has been stranded at Geta Village Developemt Committee after his liberation from the aged-old bonded-labour system on July 17 said,   " I will also have my own house in life."

Ramlal seemed quite sure of his future this time when Deputy Prime Minister Ramchandra Poudel handed over an identity card     recognising him as an erstwhile Kamaiya amid a function here.

Ex-Kamaiya Rehabilitation Coordination and Monitoring Committee formed by the government started to distribute ID cards to all ex-Kamaiyas since Saturday after the committee finished its first phase of former Kamaiya verification works in Kailali.

DPM Poudel handed in the ID cards to 50 ex-Kamaiyas at Geta VDC and also distributed seven and half kg of rice each of them for the coming fortnight, taking view of Dashain festival.

"The government has decided to give 500 grams of rice per day to each  ex-Kamaiya during Dashain festival," DPM Poudel said.

DPM Poudel, who is now also looking after the portfolio of Home Ministry, said the ex-Kamaiyas will be settled in their respective old villages with a piece of land for housing.

"The government will take necessary steps for settlement, education and employment of the ex-Kamaiyas," Poudel said, adding that the Nepali Congress government would also work for their rehabilitation.

According to land reforms office in Kailali, a total of 5,679 ex-Kamaiyas have been recorded so far out of 594 households of ex-Kamaiyas, who are currently staying in 17 different camps in Kailali district.
