We are not money-minded
There was a telefilm on Star TV on
September 23 called "The Ring" in the morning show. We were pleased to have
found our leading actors and actresses taking part in the film. Their quality of the
acting was greatly enhanced by the best direction and technical know-how of the Indian
unit. We really enjoyed the catches of majestic beauty of our own land. The dialogue was
in Hindi but we took it for granted because the whole telefilm was an interpretation of a
story told by a local Nepalese salesman to an Indian couple who was going to marry
shortly.
They happened to come to this shop to buy a
ring. The salesman, Rajaram Poudel, shows them a ring and tells them a story that is
associated with the ring. His story reveals that the ring was formerly a symbol of two
unsuccessful lovers- Rajaram himself (younger part played by Sushil Chhetri) and Sunny
Rauniyar. Having found the emotional aspect attached to the ring, the couple is very
touched. They become ready to buy the ring at any cost. When the deal is made at a higher
price than its original cost, Rajaram makes a conclusive speech "It is the time for
salesmanship so one has to tell a fake story in the business." This is very
ridiculous.
There have been many instances when Indian
news and media have tried to misrepresent the values and emotions of Nepalese society.
Like the unauthorized report of IA hijack by Indian news media and the mischievous
representation of Nepalese culture and tradition by one movie "Gharwali
Baharwali", this telefilm will also have an adverse impact on the interpretation of
Nepalese society by viewers.
Furthermore, I would like to express my
dissatisfaction at NTV and senior actors and actresses for failing to understand this
grave situation. It should be remarked that NTV was also in the unit of the production. At
last, I would like to stress that we are not money-minded at all, we have our own values
and emotions which cannot be sold or purchased but shared with friends and well-wishers.
