Firecrackers worth over Rs 100 thousand seized

Post Report

BIRGUNJ, Oct 23 - Firecrackers worth more than 100 thousand rupees were seized within one hour in Birgunj, one of the main entrance to Nepal at the presence of Superintendent of Police in Parsa district on Sunday.

The initiative was taken as the police seized firecrackers only worth 50 to 60 thousand rupees within one week though strict order was given to police officers and border police posts to seize firecrackers illegally imported to Nepal.

The Superintendent of Police in Parsa district Shyam Krishna Karmacharya then Sunday went himself at Inarwa border police post located at the main entrance gate and inspected for one hour with the result that more than 100 thousand rupees worth of fire-crackers were seized within one hour, SP Karmacharya told The Kathmandu Post on Monday.

Fifty percent of the total firecrackers entering Nepal from India comes through Birgunj. Police have so far seized 160 thousand rupees worth of firecrackers while Birgunj Customs Office has seized 10 thousand rupees worth of firecrackers.

Although the police and customs officials are engaged in seizing the illegally imported firecrackers they have not been successful to seize large quantities of these banned items as their employees are not active in areas like Birgunj, according to police source. The source says some of the seized firecrackers are sent to the seniors and high-placed people in Kathmandu as "gift".

SP Karmacharya has claimed that all the firecrackers seized by them will be destroyed.

Police sources said if all the police officers worked as hard as SP Karmacharya did, firecrackers worth millions of rupees would have been seized by now.
