Former Kamaiyas seek rehabilitation

Post Report

DHANGADHI, Oct 25 - Recently liberated Kamaiyas once again reiterated that they would come to the streets unless the government immediately arrange for their rehabilitation.

The government declared emancipation of the Kamaiyas from the age-old semi-slavery bonded-labour system practised in the five districts of the Mid-and Far-Western Terai region on July 17.

Kamaiya Liberation Struggle Committee on Monday requested the government to meet their 12-point demand by the end of November 5.

Some of the pertinent demands made here public by the committee include ten katthas of land to each Kamaiya family, immediate distribution of Identity Cards to all the erstwhile Kamaiyas, implementation of the minimum agriculture wage set-forth by the government and, abolition of the current practice of identifying the Kamaiyas based on the recommendation of the landlords.

A press release issued by committee's coordinator Raj Dev Chaudhary demanded that government should provide small farmers with agriculture tools, seeds and fertilizers on subsidized rate and modern agriculture system in the five Terai districts of the region.
