Nepal finish with 23 golds

KATHMANDU, Sept 8 - Nepalese bagged a rich haul of 44 medals,
including 23 golds to stamp their authority in the first South Asian Wushu Championship
that concluded here Friday.
Nepal added six more golds on the third and final day of the
event with Binod Lama winning the men's nangun event at 9.08 points. The event was all
Nepalese affair as Sanjay Maharjan and Suraj Shrestha coming finishing second and third
respectively.
The Nepalese women had a similar result in the same event
with Nima Dhamal taking gold securing 8.88 points while Ruka Thapamagar and Buddhisara
Thapa clinched second and third place.
Likewise in the women's gun-shu event, Bina Lama with 9.20
points to claim gold. The second place went to Mamata Budhathoki also from Nepal and Sri
Lankan Samara Wickrama D settled for bronze.
Neema Dhamala pocketed gold medal in women's nandao, scoring
9.01 points while Ruku Thapamagar finished second and India's Neelam Sharma took third
place.
Kumar Sujith Sampath of Sri Lanka broke the Nepalese
dominance on the final day, winning men's jian-shu (sword play). He put in fine display
for 9.13 points to relegate Raj Kumar Thapa to the second place. The third place went to
another Sri Lankan Muna Singhe UK.
In the men's under 65kg shan-sau event, Shyam Bista took gold
defeating RK Shanti Kumar of India in the final. PJ Ranith won bronze in the event.
Bhushan Bajracharya fetched another gold for Nepal when he
put off the challenge of Eranga Weerasinghe of Sri Lanka in the title bout for men's under
70kg while A Jiten Singh of India took bronze.
Elvis Nishantha beat Jitendra Kumar of India to win the
second gold medal of the day to put Sri Lanka upto the second position in the final medal
standing. Kishore Bohara stood at third in the event.
Nepal, beside winning 23 gold medals also made a clean sweep
of other honours in the competition. Binod Lama and Bina Lama were adjudged the best male
and female player while the title of the best fighter went to Narayan Shrestha.
Chief guest member-secretary of National Sports Council gave
away prizes and certificates to the players. On the occasion, the president of Indian
Wushu Association, Anand Kakar was handed over the South Asian Wushu Federation Flag
following the declaration of Indian capital New Delhi as being the next edition of the
championship in 2002.
The three-day competition, organised by Nepal Wushu
Association drew a total of 57 wushu participants, including eight from Bangladesh, 16
from Sri Lanka, 13 from India and 20 Nepal.
