ASCOL, Naya Bazaar showcase NBA C'ship
By a Post Reporter
KATHMANDU, Sept 11 - ASCOL and Naya Bazaar Club will be
showcasing the second National NBA Basketball Championship final Wednesday.
In the exciting semifinals held Monday at Army headquarters
ground, ASCOL quelled the challenge of Tribhuvan Club while Naya Bazaar defeated Nepal
Commerce Campus (NCC).
As the final scoreline of 70-63 would suggest, the match
between ASCOL and Tribhuvan Club was a see-saw battle throughout, spellbinding the crowd
with some exhilarating moves.
Both the teams' defenders had a tough task during the match
checking each others brisk pace of attacks. While there was not much to choose between
them in terms of team-work but ASCOL with Sampten O'Sullivan in their ranks always had a
cutting edge in terms of individual contribution to the team.
O'Sullivan hardly looked deterred by the tight marking from
the Army defenders as he put in another match winning display. While his colleagues fed
him with nice passes, he frustrated the Army with his dead accurate long rangers and
equally brilliant looking lay-ups from the close to finish with 20 points.
He was also the topscorer with 20 points in their emphatic
80-39 quarterfinal win over Club de Mad Max on Saturday.
Tribhuvan Club, who looked such an impressive side in their
quarterfinal win against Bishal Nagar had their work cut out as Bhuvan Shrestha, their
leading scorer never really breakaway from the opposite defenders, which left Rajendra
Thapa with extra burden. Thapa did not disappoint his clubmen though, scored 13 points.
But again that was never enough to match the O'Sullivan's prolific scoring and the Army
had to accept the defeat.
The other match of the day witnessed Naya Bazaar, riding on
the scoring prowess of lanky Rishi Robertson and Jesse Holander put off the challenge of
NCC by 65-52.
Robertson, followed his superb 27 points in their
quarterfinal with another 22 in the match.
NCC, trailing by 31-21 at half-time simply did not have
enough wherewithal to catch their opposition and ended up losing the match by 13 points.
