Inhumane killing

I am a Dutch journalist and I visit Nepal frequently. This time, I decided to take a pleasure trip to Pokhara to cool my mind, until I read in the newspaper about the poisoning of dogs there. As an animal lover, no way, could I face that - I cancelled. There’s no question, for obvious reasons like rabies, the dog population needs to be controlled, but there are other less hideously cruel ways of dealing with the problem.

As I began winding up my affairs here, looking for something positive to write about when I get home, it came to my attention the programme of poisoning of dogs was also about to take place in Kathmandu. I was informed, that the government of this Hindu-Buddhist country found this agonising contemptible method of death acceptable - because it is cheap!

However, there are humane ways of dealing with this problem.
