Niraj Gurung still on top

KATHMANDU, April 5 - Niraj Gurung, the leader of pool A in the Selection tournament for First South Asian and 18th Asian Snooker Championship, increased his lead to six wins in the league matches played at Cosmos Solarium and Excelsior Snooker Club today.

The selection matches are being held to choose the players to represent Nepal in 18th Asian Snooker tournament which is due to be held in Karachi, Pakistan and First South Asian Snooker Championship in Kathmandu.

Niraj’s wins today included the likes of Manoj Malla who was overshadowed pretty easily 3-1, Tashi Wanchuk losing to him 1-3 and Chakra Lama who couldn’t check his form despite fight at 3-2. Gurung has now advanced to the quarter-final stage of the tournament.

Tashi Lama, despite his loss to Niraj Gurung entered the quarter-final round as he was the runner-up from the pool A. He was able to beat Chakra Lama 3-2 in a closely fought five frame battle.

In the pool B, Angkami Lama entered the quarter finals beating Rajen Lama 3-1. However, Lama was defeated by Suroj Mulmi 3-1 in another match held earlier today. Having lost to Ang Kami Lama earlier, Rajen Lama came back well to beat Indra Gurung in three straight sets.

Chakra Lama, Ranju Shrestha and Sanjay Mulmi, presently level with equal points, will be playing against each other again to decide their place in the next round of the tournament. These matches will be held at the Excelsior Club. Likewise Rajen Lama, Ramesh Khadka and Indra Gurung who had the equal points will also playing again to secure their place in the quarter finals.
