Kathmandu thrash Chitwan

Post Report

KATHMANDU, April 19 - The tournament’s only sensational century by man of the match, opener Paresh Lohani, helped Kathmandu to overpower Chitwan by a huge margin of 224 runs in the first play of group C in the ongoing 17th Jay Trophy National cricket tournament held at University Cricket Ground Kirtipur, today.

Winning the toss, Kathmandu elected to bat first, but paceman Kush Gurung of Chitwan made an early breakthrough by ousting Buddhi Ram Tamang when only 13 runs were added on the board. Kathmandu lost yet another wicket after scoring 48 runs. Thanks to the tournament’s highest partnership of 140 runs between Paresh Lohani and Sandeep Shrestha 43 off 73 balls including three boundaries, Kathmandu managed to reached a comfortable total of 188 for three wickets before 40 overs. The slog overs pinched too much to bear for Chitwan resulting in a very aggressive batting by Birendra Shah, who lofted the ball over the boundary for four times and also hit two 4's finishing with not out 54 off just 37 balls. Prafulla Baidhya also contributed 14 runs off just 12 balls with a maiden boundary. The versatile Paresh Lohani upset all seven bowlers of Chitwan with his shots at every corner of the ground, concluding his long inning of 126 runs off 134 balls which consisted nine perfectly timed boundaries before being run out. None of the Chitwan bowlers looked impressive and couldn’t control the onslaught of runs from Kathmandu who set a huge target of 304 runs in 47 overs by the loss of 5 wickets including 49 extras.

Under severe pressure of chasing a massive target of around seven runs per over, all-rounder Kush Gurung made a promising start by chipping in 23 runs off 34 balls. Skipper Sudip Piya was the only batsman besides Kush who touched double figures by managing 14 runs with two boundaries. Within 27.1 overs Chitwan ended up with a mere 80 runs losing all wickets with the help of additional 23 extras. On the bowling department of Kathmandu, captain Kiran Rana showed his class by offering just 11 runs with 3 maiden overs and claiming 5 wickets on the economy of 1.20 runs per over in his 09.1 overs spell. Other bowlers, Kalam Ali 06-00-22-01, Rajesh Panta 04-00-20-02 and Raju Basnet 07-00-21-02 bowled in tandem for Kathmandu. Kathmandu will take on Dhanusa at Engineering College Ground, Pulchowk whereas Chitwan will try to nurse their wounds playing against Parsa from group C at University Cricket Ground, Kirtipur, tomorrow.
