Why
only ISI ?
The article "Spy vs spy : Kathmandu turning
into an intelligence hub" by Suman Pradhan which appeared in the April 17, 2001 issue
of your newspaper made a very interesting reading. It is indeed a matter of grave concern
that Kathmandu is being turned into what could be termed as the spy capital of the world.
While it is evident from the article that
intelligence agencies from all major countries of the world are using Kathmandu as a
listening post, what is surprising is that it is only the Pakistani intelligence agency,
ISI, which is invariably being caught red-handed with arms, explosives and counterfeit
currency deals. The message to be drawn from this is that either the ISI operatives are
inept at their work (and hence end up getting caught with their pants down every time) or
that they are the only ones indulging in such unacceptable and dangerous activities which
stand to directly harm Nepals own security. I, for one, feel that the latter is
true, for had any other agency been doing so, they would have come to the notice of the
Nepalese government at some stage or the other.
Thus, while the use of Nepalese territory by any
intelligence agency is objectionable, what the ISI has been indulging in is totally
unacceptable and could pose serious threats to Nepal itself in the long -run.
