Shahi, Knott take mixed doubles’ title

KATMANDU, April 27 - Chandra Shahi and Elizabeth Knott clinched the mixed doubles’ title in the second King’s Cup tennis tournament defeating in form pair of Kaptan and Nayana Karsolia held at the Saatdobato tennis court today.

The three setter fight ended with 6-4, 1-6 and 6-3 in favor of the Shahi/Knott pair. The pair eased through the first set 6-4, looked like going easily but the Karsolias came back with winning spirit and snatched the second set by huge difference 1-6. Finally, Karsolias were without answer to the back-hands, full swing serve and perfect combination of Shahi/ Knott, the No. 1 pair. With the title, Shahi/Knott pair were rewarded by NRS 11500.

In a tough first set battle Kamal Thapa knocked Deepak Shrestha 7-6 and followed it with an easy second set 6-1 in veteran’s (40 plus) semi-final. Manoj Rana got rid of S. Dhakwa in straight set 6-2, 6-4 and registered his name for the final battle against Kamal Thapa.

Similarly, in the semi-final events of 50 plus veterans, Madhukar Rana breezed through M. B. Mathema 6-2, 6-1. Rana will take on Laxman Rana who beat B. Scultz in straight set 6-1, 6-4.

In women’s doubles semi final, the pair of Vindiya Dayananda and Saima Khan washed the hope of Haunt/Saliwar pair entering into the final, beating them 6-2, 6-2. In another one sided affair, Malika Rana/Elizabeth Knott won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 against the pair of Mini Jagirdar and Nayana Karsolia.

Nayana Karsolia, though losing in the ladies doubles’, did not disappoint the fans as she entered the final of junior girls segment defeating Mini Jagirdaar while Malika Rana also booked her entry into the final.

The final events of the tournament will be held on coming Saturday and Sunday.
