Taekwondo selection gets underway

LALITPUR, Aug 3 - Parag Das and Manoj Kumar Singh ensured their places in the taekwondo closed-camp following their semifinal victory in the fin weight (54kg) class in the taekwondo selection tournament which started at the taekwondo complex, Satdobato on Friday.

A total of 53 players are competing in the tournament being held to select players for the closed-camp in the run-up to the 9th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games which are being held in Islamabad, Pakistan later this year.

Parag Das of Western Region indulged in a see-saw battle with Central Region’s Kumar Manandhar in the fin weight semifinal. There was very little to choose between the two but Das, thanks to his quick reflex actions towards the close, pulled a couple of vital point to enter the final with a slender 5-4 margin. Before that, Das quelled the challenge of Hemraj Khadka of Central Region on his way to the semifinals.

In the other semifinal of the same event, Mid-western Region’s Manoj Kumar Singh completely dominated the fight against the Eastern Region player, Rakesh Yadav. His flurry of kicks forced the referee to stop the contest (RSC), declaring him the winner in the second round.

Koshis Khadka and Deepak Bista, 8th SAF Games gold medallists, both made comfortable entry into the last four of their respective weight categories.

Khadka representing the Western Region put off the challenge of Eastern Region’s Sanjiv Karki in bantamweight (58-62kg). Nirmal Shrestha of Central Region and Suresh Gautam of Tribhuvan Club also won their respective game to join Khadka in the semifinals in the same category.

Far-western Region’s Bista defeated Dev Narayan Chaudhary on his way to the semifinals of the featherweight (62 - 67 kg). To join Bista in the semifinals, Tarakeshwor Nath Singh beat Prabin Ale of Eastern Region.

Other winners:

Fly weight (54-58 kg)— Purna Yonjan (Eastern Region), Hasta Bahadur Thapa (Tribhuvan Club), Dinesh Majhi (MPC), Kumar Bahadur Karki (Central); Lightweight (67-72 kg)— Ghanashyam Khadka (MPC), Krishna Chaudhary (Western), Kusum Lama (Eastern), Kamal Chhetri (TC); Welterweight (72-78kg)— Gopal Chauhan (Eastern), Ramji Prashad Dahal (MPC), Sashi Mahat (TC); Middleweight (78-84kg)— Chitra Khawas (Eastern), Bhim Bahadur Ranabhat (TC); Heavy weight (over 84kg)— Suman Pratik Shrestha (Eastern), Bijaya Shah (Central), Krishna Man Shrestha (TC), Gobinda Sharma (Mid-western).

Squash men’s singles final today

The final and third place play-off for the men’s singles of the second National Squash Championship will be held at Satdobato squash complex on Saturday, the National Sports Council (NDC) said in its press release that was received here on Friday.

Hira Bahadur Thapa of Western Region takes on Central Region’s Suresh Gurung in the final while Subarna Dhakhwa (Central) meets Nirman Chaudhary (Eastern) in the play-off, the press release reads. The rest of the events have been already completed with the Central Region finishing ahead of Western and Eastern Regions. Likewise, Swayata Kayastha of Central Region took the top honours in the women’s singles, defeating Sitashma Thapa of Eastern Region while Pratibha Yakthumba of Western Region settled for the third place.

A total of 42 squash players, including six women, representing five development regions and Nepal Police are taking part in the competition. Squash is one of the 14 disciplines that has been included in the forthcoming 9th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games due to be held in Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
