Feel the pulse of society
The interesting news story entitled
"Maoist womens call for liquor ban worries business community", written by
Subas Risal (TKP, August 14, 2001) has, I think, misled the readers. Though the story was
about the "Maoist womens call for liquor ban", it states nothing about the
ban and its logic behind banning the liquor.
The story was just what the three people said
in the interaction but the reporter did not ask any so called Maoist women leaders why
they called for such a ban and what will be its effects.
It would have been better had the reporter
tried to quote the leaders concerned. They are working under the capitals nose. It
is not like a underground type of campaign.
Though I do not support personally the Maoist
movement in the country, I cannot understand why on earth the government and some business
tycoons are selling liquor at cost to thousands of family break-ups, domestic violence,
and bankruptcy?
I request Risal not to underplay the genuine
appeal of the woman organisations which is on a campaign to stamp out the social evil. He
cannot write a one-sided story focusing just on national economy. Why did not you write
anything when liquor was/is being sold out like hot cakes in each and every shop and to
all, without any age bar or restrictions? I think The Kathmandu Posts duty to the
society is not lobbying for undisturbed and maximum consumption of liquor. Listen to the
society before you write.
