NSC still awaits surplus fund

Post Report

KATHMANDU, Aug 20 - The task of setting the Nepali team for the upcoming 9th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games seems to be getting dauntingly long. With the Games only 47 days away, the officials of the National Sports Council (NSC) are still unclear as to when they would receive the additional budget they demanded to the Ministry of Finance.

The NSC officials returned empty handed Monday as their meeting — which was to make the final decision on the issue — with the officials of Ministries of Education and Sports and Finance ended without any firm decision.

"The meeting ended without firm conclusion as the joint-secretary of the Ministry of Finance remained absent," said Ramesh Khanal, the NSC spokesman.

He said joint-secretary Madhav Ghimire was out of the town owing to some emergency works. "The work is in progress and we’ll learn the final decision upon his return," Khanal said. He also said that there would not be any changes to the number of Nepali contingent for the Games, remaining at 230 members.

The Ministry of Finance had promised to allocate the additional fund required for the Nepali team’s participation in Islamabad Games, starting from October 6.

In the meantime, the 14 sports associations, responsible for the disciplines that Nepal is scheduled to participate in the Games started the closed-camp training from today. They are expected to carry out the final selection within a couple of weeks. All the participating countries are required to make the entry by name at the 9th SAF Games Organising Committee on September 5 by latest.
