Colgate Palmolive mgmt-employees talks continue

Post Report

HETAUDA, Aug 27 - The management and striking employees of Colgate Palmolive, a multinational company that manufactures toothpaste, continued to hold talks to resolve their dispute. However, till the time of filing this report, the talks remained inconclusive.

"Though several rounds of talks have been held between the representatives of the laid off employees and the company since Sunday, no agreement has been reached so far," says Hitler Biset, President of the Hetauda Industrial District Industry Association. Colgate Palmolive has its factory inside the premises of the industrial estate.

The company has been facing labour problems since the management announced to lay off nine contract employees out of the total 32. The remaining 23 employees were temporarily appointed by the company.

The company’s decision was in line with the decision of the employee union’s decision in the industrial estate to disallow the contract labour system recently. The strike had begun Sunday.

"Due to the current strike, all production activities of the company has been stopped," informed a senior level official, talking to The Kathmandu Post. The strikers are preventing the entry of other workers into the factory premises.

The company was set up with an investment of Rs 600 million. Employing over 250 people presently, the company is running at losses of Rs 20 million daily due to the present strike.
