Farce talk

It was quite a scene to see our dear KMC staff on the streets, brandishing brooms on one hand and mobile phones on the other (To clean city of garbage KMC staff stoop to the streets, August 27, 2001, TKP). But the millions of urbanites, who have witnessed such occasional "clean up" scenes, know very well how fickle and ritualistic they are. While the Mayor of Kathmandu continues to roar untiringly over the need to clean up, the city, including its numerous alleys, is slowly staggering under an overwhelming burden of filth and garbage. There is no need to blame bandhs and strikes, stinking garbage of Kathmandu valley is enough to drive away tourists, once and for all. Only Bhaktapur municipality has been able to maintain its environment, and it must be noted that the people of this district are not so publicity hungry, unlike KMC employees. But our KMC's talk to regulate and dispose tons of garbage produced daily has turned out to be nothing more than a farce.
