Greater transparency
Kudos to The Kathmandu Post for publishing
the reaction of the Royal Nepal Army, who willingly or unwillingly, finally opted to make
public the details of the entire Holeri episode.
Such details should have been given a long
time back in a transparent manner when the operation was still on, and the public was kept
in the dark either by the army or the government, just like during the Royal massacre. At
some point, until when the news was out in your paper, many had begun to think that our
highly respected soldiers, world-renowned for their peacekeeping missions, have been
defeated by a group of gun-clad rebels in Rolpa.
For maintaining a greater transparency during
such missions for RNA, garnering public support as well as giving the much needed boost to
the morale of their lower rank officials are highly significant.
I hope that the politicians will stop
dragging the army into controversy in order to gain cheap publicity. And I hope the
article has sent a clear message to the Maoists that looting and abduction, and, at the
same time, calling for talks will lead them to nowhere.
