Sensitive statement
This refers to the news story titled
"Koirala against foreign investment in media", dated December 13, 2001, TKP.
Here, Koiralas statement totally
contradicts with what he said a month ago after he returned from Biratnagar. He had said
that he would allow foreign investment in media as well. He had even accused Prime
Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba of blocking foreign investment in media. This must have come
out of frustration since he had to resign under pressure from his own party. This happened
a week after he resigned from the post of the prime minister. If a responsible leader and
three time Prime Minister twists his tongue time and again, what would be the impact on
Nepals image abroad. Poor prime ministers preach poor policy. At least Koirala seems
to have understood the sensitivity of media and national interest. It is good and we must
appreciate his sensitivity. But after we have allowed foreign investment in print media,
how are we going to change our policy? This is a question Koirala should be able to answer
it.
I have heard that a hefty amount was paid as
commission to high level officials and politicians. Though late, I am happy to know that
our leaders are showing concern over the matter and I believe that the policy will not let
any trespassers into Nepali media.
