Need for sanitation facilities stressed

KATHMANDU, Dec 14 (PR) - Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives Chitra Lekha Yadav, called for proper sanitation facilities for the people throughout the country,Friday.

" Speaking at a three-day Third National School Sanitation and Hygiene Education Workshop,the Deputy Speaker said," I will make a representation in the Parliament for this purpose."

Nepal’s record on sanitation is very poor. A national survey of 1985 on diarrhoea-related diseases found that about 45,000 children pass away every year because of diarrhoea. According to BECHAM/UNICEF Report 2000, only 33 percent of the total population have access to toilets in Nepal whereas only 17 percent of toilets count in proper use.

President of District Development Committee, Kapilvastu, Ramesh Sharma said, "Many of the schools in Kapilvastu lack proper toilets and the brunt of this is borne by girl students."

The programme is being participated by chairmen of different District Development Committees, representatives of Village Development Committees, representatives of the Red Cross Society, drinking Water and Sewerage Corporation offices, NGOs, INGOs and teachers.
