NWA to organise Junior World Weightlifting C’ship

KATHMANDU, Dec 15 – Seven-day long Weightlifting Solidarity course for the Nepali coaches organised by Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) and Nepal Weightlifting Association (NWA) got underway on Saturday.

The course was inaugurated at a function held here by Minister of State for Education and Sports Narayan Prasad Saud.

At the function, Rajesh Kaji Shrestha, president of NWA informed that the association will organise Junior World Weightlifting Championship in the second week of June 2002. "We have negotiated with International Olympic Committee (IOC) and World Weightlifting Federation (WWF) over organising the championship," said Shrestha who had visited Hungary to bid for the Junior World Championship.

Likewise PS Sengupta, chief weightlifting coach and widely known as Mitthu Guru, urged the National Sports Council (NSC) and the Ministry of Education and Sports to support in successfully organising the championship. "This is a golden opportunity for us to introduce Nepal as a peace loving nation and a good championship venue," he said.

During the programme, NOC general secretary Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan highlighted the prospects of tourism. He said, "More than 80 countries will participate the championship and if they get nice impression their words of mouth will certainly help Nepali tourism."

At the occasion, NOC president Rukma SJB Rana delivered vote of thanks to the Hungarian expert Attila Adamfi, under whom the solidarity course will be completed. Rana also expressed his satisfaction over NWA activities. "There are 22 member associations of NOC but we can’t organise solidarity course for all of them, but taking into account the upcoming World Championship, we organised the solidarity course," he said.

On the occasion, Adamfi hoped that the championship will be carried out successfully. "I believe that Nepal will carry out the Championship with great participation."
