Sharma climbs up as Toran topples

Post Report

KATHMANDU, Dec 18 – Purna Sharma climbed four places up to position himself at the top of the table in the fourth Carlsberg Nepal PGA Championship here Tuesday at the Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC).

On the second day of the tournament when most of his fellow professionals struggled to get into grooves, Sharma sparkled with even par at the front nine. He followed that up with three birdies at back nine, including consecutive birdies at 12th and 13th holes.

Sharma, RNGC pro, completed the second round at two under 65 for an aggregate even par 134 a one-stroke lead over second placed Deepak Thapamagar who stands at one over 135. He could
have registered a runaway lead over Thapamagar as he had 16 opportunities to go for birdie putts only to squander on 13 occasions.

Thapamagar played even par 33 at the front nine with a birdie and bogey. He started well on return with birdies at the 10th and again at the final hole but bogeys at 12th, 16th and 17th put paid to his effort to takeover the lead.

The biggest disappointment of the day, however, was the overnight leader Toran Shahi who had a miserable round today dropping six shots off the par. His second round score of six over par 73 saw him fall four places down to overall fifth position. While he managed a birdie each at either nines, eight bogeys – four each at the front and back nine – did the damage leaving him at fifth place overall alongside Ramesh Nagarkoti at 5 over par 139.

Sabin Sapkota, a pro representing Dharan Nirvana Country Club, who held the seventh place overnight gained four places to the third following an even par 67 in the second round for an overall 3 over par 137.

With two more days to go, Gokarna Golf Club pro Deepak Acharya still holds hopes to catch up the frontrunners, playing the second round at 3 over par 70. He stands at the fourth place with an aggregate score of 4 over par 138.

Among the amateurs, C B Bhandari is pulling away from rest of his colleagues completing the second round at even par 67 to top the chart with one over par 135. He now has a runaway nine-stroke lead over the second placed Mani Rai at 10 over par 144. Raj Pradhan, who stood at second overnight, finished the day one place down to third at 12 over par 146.

A total of 26 golfers, 13 each in professional and amateur category, are competing in the four-day tournament being organised by Gorkha Brewery Ltd in conjunction with RNGC and Nepal Professional Golfers’ Association.
