Thapa spells doom for Jhapa

Post Report

DHARAN, Dec 20 – Basanta Thapa’s double helped Gorkha Boys of Rupandehi defeat Jhapa XI 3-2 in the Budha Subba Gold Cup invitational football tournament on Thursday.

Although Jhapa found themselves in the lead just three minutes into the game, they ended up as losers thanks to Thapa’s brilliance.

Prem Subba was the first scorer of the match as his powerful shot found the Rupandehi nets in the third minute. It was a long pass from the midfield by Bhuvan Thebe and Subba showed tremendous control over the ball to bury it into the opposition goal.

Just after conceding the lead, Rupandehi players started a wave of attacks and Thapa took advantage of the situation to the maximum. Accepting a pass from Rajesh Shahi in the 12th minute, Thapa took the ball right in front of the opposition penalty area and rounded off the Jhapa goalie.

Thapa found his touch yet again in the 40th minute as he took Rupandehi into the lead for the first time in the match. Rupak Gurung, Jhapa ‘keeper, moving forward to grab the ball hardly could get near it as Thapa nudged it past him to go 2-1 up in the match. It was again Shahi-Thapa pair which brought success to Rupandehi.

Nagendra Limbu of Jhapa levelled the score 2-2 twenty minutes into the second half as his header got past the Rupandehi goalie. He showed wonderful timing to the pass of Subba, scorer for Jhapa on the earlier occasion, inside the Rupandehi penalty area.

Once the scores were level at 2-2, both the teams started series of attacks to get into the lead. However, the match finished in somewhat tame fashion as Rupandehi got the final goal through a penalty shot. Himal Thapa, skipper of the Rupandehi team, took the penalty in the 71st minute and did not disappoint his team members.

Nagendra Limbu was declared man of the match on the day. Rupandehi will now take on last year’s runners-up Mahendra Police Club on December 24.
