Metro-English
The Kathmandu Metropolis is busy putting huge
hoardings around the city. At Thapathali and Tripureshwor, there are big banners welcoming
SAARC delegates with eye catching phrases. Unfortunately, the spelling error in these big
banners is causing "non-stop laugh" among the literate communities.
This is SAARC events. National and international
media are now focusing in Kathmandu. Unfortunately Kathmandu Metropolis has shown its
lowest level of English displayed in banners.
Examples:
1. Thapathali Chowk: On the top of the Ekta Book
House in Thapathali, you can see a board saying "HEARTILY WELL COME......"
2. On the top of Trolley Bus Stop in
Tripureshwor you will find: "HEARY WELCOME TO SAARC....."
Words like "Heartily", "Well
Come" and "Heary" are probably the lowest level of English understanding in
Kathmandu Metropolis staff. They need a good English dictionary.
Please think what the delegates, media and
visitors will talk about Nepals level of English by seeing these faulty banners. I
would like to request you to bring this into light immediately by any means so that the
authorities can correct the mistakes before it is too late.
The banners are perhaps made by NICE &
BAJRACHARYA painting company. They are illiterate people. But the officer who is
overseeing these works should have some English language knowledge.
