Housing for parliamentarians

Your report under the headline "Secure housing for parliamentarians" published on December 21, 2001 regarding the government’s decision to build government housing for the parliamentarians in view of growing security concerns (as mentioned) must have been a most appreciated and long awaited positive step by our parliamentarians. If only the parliament were in session at present, the parliamentarians including those from the opposition parties would have already joined their hands in passing the vote of thanks.

Seen from the point of view of the public, this comes as another proof where the government seems to have failed to identify the priorities. To the public, it is more urgent to have pure water to drink which has been one of the major causes of different types of diseases or the roads constructed or to have hospitals built. There are so many other areas where the apportioned amount of Rs 860 million set aside for building the housing complex can be better utilised. The recently constructed road linking Pharping to Hetauda within two and half hours in its present condition, if black topped and a bridge constructed by the above amount which has been earmarked for the housing complex, enables HMG to save millions of dollars by way of savings in national fuel consumption, wear and fear of vehicles and savings in time for travel and most of all it would be an alternative route to link the capital city in cases of closures of Prithvi Highway and the Tribhuvan Rajpath.

Doesn’t this call for a serious attention from the decision-makers?
