Post Report
KATHMANDU, Feb 1 - Since Nepal did not pay the registration fee to FIDE -
world chess governing body - in time, Nepali players have been defaulted from
participation in the Goodricke International Open Chess Championship to be held in
Calcutta from Feb 6th to Feb 17th, according to joint secretary of Nepal Chess
Association, Bhagwati Prasad Sharma.
"We had selected Nepals number two player, Shyam Bahadur Thapa to
represent Nepal and informed the organisers about it but they informed us that Nepal
cannot participate in the championship as the registration fee of FIDE was not paid,"
Sharma said.
According to him National Sports Council (NSC) has not submitted the fee
amount since 1998. However, Nepal was allowed to participate in the championship in 1999.
He also said that Nepal Chess Association had informed NSC about it three months earlier.
Nepal has been participating in the prestigious championship since 1996.
Sharma also said that if Nepal pays the due amount (approx NRs 83,000), Nepal may be
allowed to participate in the Asian Region and Asian Individual championship starting from
Feb 19.
