Maoist attack

This refers to the news story entitled "Attack on CJ condemned" dated February 5, 2001, TKP. The attempt to assassinate the chief justice clearly projects the deteriorating law and order in the country. Maoists have intensified their activities. How the government has evaluated this, however, remains to be seen. The Maoists said that they would step up their activities. The national dailies gave a coverage on the attack unnecessarly. Had there been some one who was a low profile official, I am sure, media would not have given such a wide coverage. However, one thing is sure that the Maoists attempted to assasinate the chief justice. The day may come the next attempt will be on the Prime Minister. Though they deny the intention, the chief justice had a narrow escape. Life is life, be it of a general citizen or of a high ranking official. The government seems still unconcerned on the Maoist problem. Always a commission is formed to make a probe, but, no Nepalese have faith in such commissions formed every now and then. Negotiation could be the only and the best solution to such issues. If the present government cannot start talks with the rebels, then it should step down to pave the way for the opposition to come to power.
