Misleading report
This is in response to the news report on the
clash between policemen and Maoist rebels published in various local dailies on February
2, 2001 including your paper. The news stated that Maoist rebels attacked the police post
located at Junbesi village, Solu-Khumbu district, killing one police officer and two
Maoist guerillas. They further stated that the clash started at 9 pm and continued for two
hours on Wednesday, January 31, 2001.
This incident never occurred and the local
community of Junbesi is enraged by such misleading and irresponsible journalism. The
general public along with people involved in trade and tourism pay the ultimate price for
this misguided and false reporting. This is a clear example of continuing abuse of
authority and intentional misleading of the public. Responsible journalists should have
verified rumours and hit the trail to photograph such incidents. This was reported not
with journalistic ethics.
I formally request to journalists to report
news with ethics and hope they would apologize for this. How and on what basis did they
use and publish such a misleading report?
