1st Surya Nepal Snooker Challenge announced

KATHMANDU, Feb 22 - Surya Tobacco Company (STC) announced to organize First Surya Nepal Snooker Challenge 2001 starting March 1 this year, in a press conference held here today.

The tournament is jointly organised by Cosmos Solarium and has the technical support of the Billiard, Snooker and Pool Association of Nepal.

The tournament is expected to be participated by more than 1000 participants, according to the organisers. The preliminary rounds of the tournament will be played in 16 various snooker parlours of the Kathmandu with final being held at Cosmos Solarium.

The winner of the tournament will win the cash prize of Rs 51,000 and a trophy. An exclusive Surya snooker cue stick will also be awarded to the winner. The first runner-up will get Rs 31,000 as prize money in addition to a trophy and a cue stick.

In addition to the prizes to the winners and runners-up, the highest breaker will be awarded Rs 11,000. The winners of the preliminary rounds of the game will be awarded Rs 3000 each.


Thapa Magar enters Semis

BHAKTAPUR, Feb 22 - Ramchandra Thapa Magar, the gold medallist in the 8th SAF Games defeated Khadag Bahadur Thapa of Tulsipur in the 60 kg weight category of the First Martyrs Memorial Cup Inter-City Boxing tournament played here today.

In the process, Thapa Magar advanced to the semi-final stage. In the same category, Rajan Awal of Bhaktapur defeated Dewan Rai of Birgunj and Birendra Singh of Nepalgunj beat Kamal Shrestha of Butwal.

In the 67 kg bout, Ram Baniya of Birgunj, Arjun Tamang of Kirtipur, Ram Krishna Prajapati of Bhaktapur and Rajesh Shrestha of Lalitpur reached the semi-finals matches defeating their opponents today. Likewise, in the 54 kg weight category Chandra Bahadur Rana of Butwal entered the semi-finals defeating his opponent Lok Mani Devkota of Tulsipur.

Tulsi Ram Desyamaru of Bhaktapur, Tirtha Maharjan of Lalitpur and Ganga Bahadur Thapa of Butawal were successful in reaching the semi-finals of the tournament defeating their respective competitors.

In the 63.5 kg weight category, Rajendra Nagarkoti of Lalitpur, Sushil Ghimire of Hetauda, and Kumar Adhikari of Kathamndu also reached the next round of game.


Goal Project in Nepal

KATHMANDU, Feb 22 - The special meeting of the Goal Bureau held on the February 13, for awarding the Goal Project to the developing countries in Asia, in the FIFA headquarters granted the goal project to Nepal, says the press release issued here today by Ganesh Thapa led All Nepal Football Association (ANFA).

The meeting unanimously earmarked $ 450,000 to eastablish technical centers in 3 development regions of Nepal as the first phase of the project. Thapa led ANFA had offered to set up 3 technical centers by 2002 and 5 centers by the year 2005 in the 5 development regions of Nepal in the proposal for the Goal Project, says the release.

FIFA has selected Nepal, Combodia, Philippines and Vietnam for the development of the sports infrastructures in the first phase of the implementation of the project.
