Political ethics

It has been a decade since we restored democracy. The faces that took the oath to serve the country selflessly changed from one to another but the country’s problems remain unabated. Some served themselves well while others served their clans and blind followers to their best ability. The nation, which overthrew corrupt Panchayat regime for good governance, has been now engulfed into the blaze of poverty, political corruption and Maoist blood bath.

Girija Prasad Koirala has won both the posts: party president and the leader of ruling party. Citizens had expected that he would work to establish a political legacy. However induction of the tainted faces again into the cabinet has faded all those hopes. Before the scares on the heart of relatives of those policemen who sacrificed their lives in Dunai were healed until Joshi was not reinducted in the cabinet. Alam who was forced to resign for allegedly involved in kidnapping, is again back with a big bang. It seems incompetence doesn’t matter in Nepalese politics. Serving a jail sentence in Panchayat era has become life long certificates to govern the country. When politics is taken as an opportunity rather than a profession, it overshadows all the norms of good governance. I won’t be surprised to see Chataut back in the cabinet in next cabinet reshuffle. Political corruption has become chronic in our country. In this regard, I want to cite a well know example of Helmut Kohl, the man behind the German reunification. He is now nobody in German politics after he was accused of financing elections. Where as in our country corrupt leaders have been calling themselves a pillar of democracy and preaching institutionalization of democratic structures. It is loud and clear that political corruption is the root cause of evil in our society.
