Hollow talks

The day after the Deuba camp filed no-trust motion against Girija Prasad Koirala, it was reported that some district committees of Nepali Congress (NC) claimed that there was no alternative to Mr Koirala "at the present scenario." This statement sums up the nature of NC party. We have been constantly hearing from its leaders that there is no alternative to the Congress party when it comes to protecting democracy. Looks like the Congress party is yet to understand the definition of democracy: the role and will of people.

From what happened in 2046 BS, Mr Koirala and his party cadres should understand that an individual or a party simply does not matter if people really speak up as a combined force. The Congress party has been responsible for bringing down every government since the restoration of democracy in 1990. Mr Koirala became Prime Minister ten months ago, promising to restore law and order, fight corruption and provide good governance. His achievements after ten months ? Hollow talks and zero results. As a person who has held power for seven of the last ten years, he should be held accountable for current miseries of Nepal. After all, he has twice headed majority governments, and this time, as party president, he himself nominated 85 percent of the Congress central committee members.

Responsibility and accountability are some of the fundamental qualities of good leadership and our netas, especially those in the ruling party, seem to be oblivious to them. Democracy can work well only if the nation-state is strong. If Nepal continues to drift in this seemingly stateless manner, then our future is bleak.
