Kala-azar claims 18 in Malangawa

MALANGAWA, Sarlahi, Jan1 - At least 18 people have so far died of Kala-azar in Pidari and Jamuniya Village Development Committees (VDC) over the last three months, locals said.

However, the District Public Health Office said that it had no knowledge about the incident.

According to Rijwan Ansari, in-charge of the Constituency No-3 of the district, 10 people were killed by the disease in the Pidari VDC and eight were killed in the Jamuniya VDC since the second week of September.

Currently, seven Kal-a-Zar patients from the Pidari VDC-9 are undergoing treatment at the Sarlahi District Hospital, the hospital source said. Chief of the District Public Health Office, Raj Kishor Singh, also conceded the out break of the disease in VDCs but expressed his ignorance about the deaths. Singh also said that he had requested the central office to spray medicine in the Kala-azar-affected area.
