Pakistan to field 15 events at SAF Games

KATHMANDU, Jan 18- The meeting of the 24th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games recently concluded at Islamabad, Pakistan has arrived at a unanimous decision to organize a total of 15 games for the upcoming 9th SAF games in Pakistan. Among the 15 categories of games, Athletics and Swimming are made compulsory events while football, volleyball, kabbadi in the team-category and Badminton, Shooting, Table Tennis, Squash, Boxing, Karate, Taekwondo, weight lifting, Wrestling and Rowing are among the individual category to be played.

Both men and women are entitled to take part in Athletics, Swimming, Badminton, Table Tennis, Squash, and Shooting while Football, Kabbadi, Boxing, Wrestling, Rowing will have only men's participation.

Whether Taekwondo, Karate and Volleyball are to be included for women’s event as per the request of Nepal, Bhutan, India and Sri Lanka will be decided again by the committee, according to a press statement issued Thursday by the Nepal Olympic Committee.

The women’s swimming event will only be organized if all women coaches, officials and spectators are present and that no cameras or any audio-visuals will be allowed inside the swimming stadium, says the release.

As per the final outcome of the said meeting, the 9th SAF games 2001 will be organized at Islamabad in Pakistan from October 6 to October 15, 2001.

Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan, General Secretary of Nepal Olympic Committee today arrived at Kathmandu after attending the meeting at Islamabad.
