Cabinet reshuffle in the offing

Post Report

KATHMANDU, Jan 27 – Just a week after winning the coveted post of the Party President of the ruling Nepali Congress (NC), Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has begun groundwork to reshuffle the cabinet and nominate the remaining members for the Central Working Committee (CWC) of the party.

Prime Minister Koirala has started consulting his close aides regarding the cabinet reshuffle and nomination of the remaining 18 CWC members today, said a source close to Koirala. "The list of the new ministers and the members nomination will be finalised only after discussing with the Senior Leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai," said the source.

The newly elected Party President Koirala is expected to nominate Bhattarai to show special respect to him. It is believed that Koirala will nominate Bhattarai prior to the distribution of certificate to the newly elected CWC members including himself. According to the source there is also probability of nominating Sher Bahadur Deuba, who lost to Koirala and Nona Koirala along with Bhattarai for CWC member.

The Prime Minister who is also NC President, can nominate 18 members in the 37 CWC members while the 18 others were elected during the party’s general convention in Pokhara earlier this week.

The reshuffle is expected to take place around Wednesday so that the new ministers will have at least a week to adapt and get a crash course before the Winter Session of the Parliament that begins on February 8.

The source said that the Prime Minister this time will also include his opponents in the cabinet and the CWC members to lessen the widening polarisation within the party.
